Germany, Ordnungspolizei. A Dress Bayonet, Long Version, by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie
(Ordnungspolizei Bajonett). A well-preserved, long version Ordnungspolizei dress bayonet measuring 49 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 33 cm, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. A fuller runs the majority of the length of the top edge of each side of the blade. It is plain with the exception of double-sided maker’s mark on the ricasso, with the reverse reading “WEYERSBERG, KIRSCHBAUM & CIE, SOLINGEN”, while the obverse bears the firm’s classic knight’s helmet logo. The blade sits securely within a one-piece nickel-plated hilt with a quillon and pommel taking the form of a double-sided eagle’s head, the latter with a hollow insertion slot retaining a functional push-button spring release. The handle grip consists of two pieces of polished staghorn, held together with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the grip is a silvered Ordnungspolizei insignia measuring 21 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a boiled brown leather shaft. Nickel-plated fixtures are riveted to both the tip and throat, with the latter featuring a downward-pointing hook for the accommodation of a frog. The former is included and consists of a piece of thick brown leather securely riveted into a loop for belt suspension. Some issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some chipping and scratching to the nickel plating of the blade, material fatigue of the scabbard leather, and sporadic verdigris to the plated fixtures. It remains in a near extremely fine condition.
