Germany, Ordnungspolizei. An Early Police Dress Bayonet, Unit-Marked Long Version, by Paul Weyersberg & Co.
(Schutzpolizei Bajonett). An early and exceptionally well-preserved Schutzpolizei (Municipal Police) dress bayonet, measuring 555 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 410 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and unspoiled edges, and with a fuller running the majority of the length of each side. Stamped onto the reverse ricasso is a maker’s mark of “PAWECO” for the firm of Paul Weyersberg & Co., Solingen. It sits securely within a one-piece nickel-plated hilt with a hooked quillon, and which completes with a non-functional hollow insertion slot and decorative push button set into the obverse side. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite comprise the handle grip, and are secured together with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a service code of “S” for Schutzpolizei, a unit code of “TR” possibly indicating Trier, and a weapon number of “64”. It is accompanied by its period original ribbon, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. The scabbard’s throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the bayonet in place during storage. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft, and secures in place a matching black leather frog, itself stitched into a loop for belt suspension. While the blade demonstrates minor, age-appropriate pitting, the bayonet presents free of damage or other wear and is in a near mint condition.
