Germany, Schutzpolizei. A Dress Bayonet, Long Version, by P.D. Lüneschloss
(Schutzpolizei Bajonett). An extremely well-preserved Schutzpolizei bayonet, measuring 46 cm in total length when inserted into the bayonet. It features an elongated 33 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. A single fuller runs the majority of the length of each side. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “P.D. LÜNESCHLOSS, SOLINGEN”. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated alloy hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, the latter taking the form of a double-sided eagle’s head. Stamped onto the reverse of the quillon is a code of “S. D. IV. 923”, indicating distribution to Schutzpolizei personnel. Two pieces of polished staghorn comprise the handle grip, and are secured together with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a boiled blackened leather shaft with non-magnetic metal fixtures riveted to the tip and throat. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the latter for the accommodation of a frog. Stamped onto the reverse of the throat fixtures is a matching code of “S. D. IV. 923”, indicating an original matche set. The throat retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the bayonet in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some tarnishing and running marks to the blade, scratching of the nickel-plated features, fatigue of the scabbard leather, and two holes visible to the handle grip indicative of period rivet realignment. This example is a superb long version in extremely fine condition.
