Germany. An 1933-35 Manufacture Hunting Cutlass by Carl Eickhorn
An example of a Third reich period German hunting cutlass, measuring 462 mm with the scabbard on, featuring 450 mm steel nickel-plated blade, with dull edges and having a sharp tip. The blade’s reverse ricasso is marked with the maker mark of Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. The blade is wonderfully etched with the standard hunting cutlass design of that period, depicting moderate bruising, as well as runner marks on the blade common to extraction and return to the scabbard, but with the original etching on the blade overall well preserved. The blade is also marked “W. Michovious, Cottbus” on the edge, being the name of the engraver. The fittings are brass, with a crossguard in the shape of a hoof, quillon, and a finger guard. The grip is constructed of synthetic ivory, with five (one missing) decorative acorns fastened to the grip. The scabbard is constructed of black stiffened leather with brass fittings on the top and bottom of the cutlass. An all-original and proudly worn piece, in overall very fine condition. (C:204)
