Germany, Heer. An Officer’s Dress Dagger, with Hanger, by Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Co.

(Heer Offiziersdolch mit Anhänger). A well-preserved Heer Officer’s dress dagger, measuring 400 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 265 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. The blade is unmarked with the exception of a maker’s mark on the reverse ricasso of “W.K.C.” for Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Co., Solingen, topped by the firm’s classic knight’s helmet logo. It sits firmly within a silvered zink alloy upper crossguard, the obverse of which presents with a raised and finely-detailed Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, with the seam covered by an intact brown leather buffer pad. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed pale orange celluloid. It completes with a flattened pommel, the outer circumference of which features a raised oak leaf design. Wrapped around the handle is a period original portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a cord of identical construction. The dagger is also accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a pebbled magnetic metal shaft. The upper third of the shaft features two integral rings decorated with raised oak leaves, each retaining a loop for the accommodation of a hanger. The throat retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the dagger in place during storage, and is held together with a single side rivet. Also accompanying the dagger is a matching hanger, constructed of two field-grey doeskin straps bearing silver aluminum wire tresses on the obverse. Each descending from a zink alloy clip, the straps are adjusted with functional buckles and both complete in zink alloy spring clips. The hanger measures 270 mm in total length as presented. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some runnings marks to the blade, in addition to loss of finish to the zink alloy elements. It is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
