Germany, Luftwaffe. An Officer’s Dress Dagger, with Hanger
(Luftwaffe Offiziersdolch mit Dolchgehänge). A well-preserved Luftwaffe Officer’s dress dagger, measuring 430 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 265 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. The blade is fully unmarked. It sits securely within a silvered alloy upper crossguard, the obverse of which presents as a finely-detailed Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, with the seam covered by an intact black leather buffer pad. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed white celluloid, with the ribbing retaining a twisted and rolled bronze wire cord. Wrapped around the handle is a period original portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acord suspended from a cord of identical construction. The dagger completes with a pommel bearing a double-sided wreathed mobile swastika, screwing in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a pebbled magnetic metal shaft. Set around the upper third of the shaft are two integral bands bearing oak leaf designs, each completing in a loop for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat is secured together with dual side rivets and retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the dagger in place during storage. Included is a dagger hanger, consisting of two field-grey doeskin straps bearing obverse grey rayon liners flanked by machine-embroidered silver aluminum wire tresses. Each strap completes at one end with a functional gilded zink spring catch for suspension from the scabbard’s loops, and is adjusted with a buckle of identical construction. The opposite ends of the straps are looped around a gilded zink double loop, itself completing in a functional spring catch for uniform attachment. Minor, age-appropriate issues are evident, and include slight oxidation and pitting of the blade, loss of finish to the silvered features, and oxidation and loss of finish to both the scabbard and dagger hanger. The set is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
