Germany. A Luftwaffe Dagger with its Matching Dagger Hanger
Second Pattern. An extremely well preserved Luftwaffe dagger, measuring 428 mm with the scabbard on, featuring a 255 mm long magnetic nickel-plated steel blade, with untouched dull edges and a sharp tip. The blade is unmarked overall. It is beautiful polished also fully retaining its cross-graining, with only very minimal marks on the blade common to extraction and return to the scabbard, but without any surface wear or pitting of any kind. The brown leather washer is seated in its place underneath the cross-guard junction. The crossguard is constructed of nickel-silver, in the shape of an eagle with out-spread wings, clutching a swastika. Following the cross-guard is a single metal washer depicting an oak leaf design, edging on a well preserved cream-coloured Bakelite grip with eleven rows of tightly wound twisted wires. The pommel is large and round in shape, featuring an oak leaf design, as well as a mobile swastika on the obverse and reverse. The scabbard is constructed of silvered metal (magnetic) with a pebbled design with oak leaf accents on the obverse and reverse, with two dagger hanger loops with oak leaf designs with attachment loops firmly secured to the upper end of the scabbard. The scabbard lip is tightly held in place by two period original screws. The dagger hangers consist of two straps, each with two rows of silver bullion wire and bluish grey embroidered uppers, with black corduroy backers and nickel-silver hardware with ornate oak leaf designs on the adjustable rectangular buckles, and a pebbled design on the spring-loaded clasp. Each strap features metal adjustment loops, as well as an ornately decorated metal slider. On the ends of each strap is a functional finezink dagger hanger. This dagger is extremely well preserved and appears only lightly worn, with the blade beautifully preserved, the Bakelite un-chipped, and the dagger hanger free of loose threads, with only minor wear to the exterior finish of the scabbard. In overall near mint condition.
