Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger
(Kriegsmarine Offiziersdolch). A very well-preserved Kriegsmarine Officer’s dagger, measuring 420 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 250 mm-long polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edges. The blade, which presents free of marks, has a single fuller that runs the length of each side. It sits securely within a bronze upper crossguard featuring a central double-sided fouled anchor insignia. Emanating from the reverse of the crossguard is a push-button stud connecting to a functional spring clip set into the blade’s ricasso, securely locking the dagger onto its scabbard. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed white celluloid, with the ribbing retaining an original twisted and rolled bronze cord. Completing the dagger is a stylized bronze pommel consisting of a German national eagle perched on top of a wreathed mobile swastika, screwing in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Wrapped around the crossguard is a period original portepee, consisting of a stylized acorn constructed of twisted and rolled silver aluminum rie, suspended from a cord of identical construction. It is also accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a bronze shaft, decorated on the exterior with etched floral and arabesque designs. The upper third of the shaft features two integral oak leaf bands, each retaining a loop for suspension from a dagger hanger. The throat retains a catch which locks on to the dagger’s clip, and is held together by one of two original side rivets. Unmarked, it displays minor issues consistent with age, including some running marks to the blade, oxidation of the bronze features, the loss of one of two of the scabbard’s throat rivets, and some wear to the portepee’s wire. It is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
