Germany, Third Reich. A German Hunting Society Cutlass

(Deutsche Jägerschaft Hirschfänger). A very well-preserved Deutsche Jägerschaft (German Hunting Society/DJ) cutlass, measuring 51 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 33 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. The blade bears double-sided acid-etched hunting scenes executed in exceptional detail, with images of boar and deer hunts in forested settings. It sits securely within a nickel-silver crossguard, in the form of stylized hooves with a central clamshell medallion on the obverse, with the seam covered by an intact brown wool buffer pad. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of curved and polished staghorn, with the obverse inset with a silvered bronze DJ insignia measuring 16 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). It completes with a flattened and ribbed pommel retaining a rivet that screws in to maintain the cutlass’ structural integrity. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of boiled dark green leather. Magnetic metal fixtures are riveted to both the tip and throat. Emanating from the latter is a downward-pointing hook in the form of a stylized acorn for the accommodation of a frog. The throat also retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the cutlass in place during storage. Demonstrating no notable damage or wear, it remains in an extremely fine condition.
