Germany, SA. A Mode 1933 Dagger, SA Group Nordsee, by Friedrich von der Kohlen
(Sturmabteilung Dolch). A well-preserved Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 dagger, measuring 375 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 222 mm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and edges. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “FR. V. D. KOHLEN” for the firm of Friedrich von der Kohlen, Solingen, topped by the firm’s monogram logo. It sits securely within a nickel-plated upper crossguard, marked with eight notches distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The reverse bears a stamped inscription of “NO” indicating distribution to SA Group Nordsee. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of dark brown wood, cut into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a partially-silvered SA logo measuring 9 mm in diameter. It completes with a nickel-plated lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, secured in place with a rounded pommel nut which maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets, with an integral loop emanating from the latter and retaining a spring clip on a leather strap for the accommodation of a hanger. The clip is maker marked with the logo of F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid. The throat also retains a functional spring catch, firmly holding the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include oxidation ot the blade, scratching of the handle grip, and loss of paint to the scabbard. It is in an overall very fine condition.
