Germany, SS. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, by J.A. Schmidt & Söhne

(SS Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved SS Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel dagger with a sharpened tip and lower edge. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) insignia, situated about a maker code of “M7/95” for J.A. Schmidt & Söhne, Solingen, in turn above an additional code of “RZM 1222/39” with double Sig runes. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered black wood, carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse pommel is a partially-silvered SS insignia, measuring 9 mm in diameter. It completes with a nickel-plated lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, secured in place with a rounded pommel nut which maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft with polished metal fixtures secured to both the tip and throat. The latter retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the dagger in place during storage. Accompanying the dagger is an original frog, constructed of black leather. It descends from a functional magnetic metal clip for uniform suspension. The reverse of the clip is maker marked with the logo of F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade, moderate loss of nickel to the plated fixtures, some chipping of the handle, loss of finish to the scabbard paint, and material fatigue of the frog. This example from a scarce manufacturer is in an overall very fine condition.
