A German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz) Officer’s Dagger with Portepee
This dagger features a diamond-shaped, unmarked, 248 mm nickel-plated magnetic steel blade, with sharpened edges, remaining bright and crisp, and having a very sharp tip. It retains its crossgraining, in addition to mild scratches overall, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, along with a natural shine, scattered wear marks evident on the blade, better than very fine. The black finished leather washer at the crossguard junction remains intact. The swastika and eagle on the obverse of the zinc based, nickel-silver plated crossguard medallion retains much of its gilt, with only some wear on the swastika and one of the eagle's wings, the medallion and the crossguard on the reverse with some spotting. Pumpkin-coloured celluloid grip is free of chipping, the pommel with surface wear and exposing the underlying zinc base, the pommel screw cap intact, the dagger measuring 365 mm in length. Wrapped around the handle in the appropriate fashion is a period portepee fabricated from fine aluminum bullion wire, the head in thin strands of bullion wire and white cord, with two strands of the wire breaking away form the body of the knot at its base, and slight fraying in a few locations on the cord itself. The steel based, nickel-silver plated scabbard is magnetic and measures 262 mm in length, both sides with a pebbled design, with two bands incorporating loops for dagger hangers, exhibiting some light spotting, with both throat retaining screws intact and is free of dents. Better than very fine.
