Germany, HJ. A Member’s Knife, by Hartkopf & Co.
(HJ Fahrtenmesser). A well-preserved HJ member’s knife, measuring 25.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 14 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. Stamped onto the reverse of the blade is a maker’s mark of “HARTKOPF & CO., SOLINGEN”, flaked by the firm’s twin devil head logo. The blade sits securely within a one-piece, nickel-plated, magnetic metal hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, with an intact black leather buffer pad covering the seam. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are secured in place with two non-magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle grip is a postwar-replaced enameled HJ insignia. The knife is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. Riveted to the reverse of the shaft is a black leather strap with a functional metal snap button to securely hold the knife in place during wear. Minor issues consistent with age are evident, and include some pitting and tarnishing to the nickel plating of the hilt, flecking of the enamels of the handle insignia, material fatigue of the leather hanger, loosing of the blade, and possible evidence of blade cleaning. It is in an overall very fine condition.
