Germany, RAD. A Reich Labour Service Model 1937 Leader’s Hewer, Damascus Blade

(Reichsarbeitsdienst Hauer). A rare Reich Labour Service (RAD) Model 1937 Leader’s Hewer, measuring 395 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 255 mm-long magnetic Damascus metal blade, bearing a fuller on each side. The obverse formerly bore a acid-etched inscription of “ARBEIT ADELT” (“LABOUR ENNOBLES”), while the reverse formerly bore an inscription of “FÜR HERVORRAGENDE LEISTUNGEN - KONSTANTIN HIERL” (“FOR OUTSTANDING MERIT - KONSTANTIN HIERL”. The reverse is also marked near the ricasso with a RAD Zulassungszeichen logo. The blade sits securely within the silver upper crossguard, the obverse of which bears a central RAD insignia, which transitions into a one-piece handle completing in a detailed eagle’s head pommel. The grip is facilitated by two strips of polish bone, secured together by a single magnetic metal rivet. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard. Constructed of magnetic metal, both the obverse and reverse of the scabbard feature pebbled centres within engraved wheat stalks, with the upper third bearing stylized ribbed designs. Dual integrated loops also emanate from the edge of the scabbard for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the dagger in place during storage, and is fastened with dual side rivets. The dagger displays signs of age and use, including deterioration of the blade which has obstructed the inscriptions, loss of silver finish, oxidation of the metal elements, and some cracking of the handle grips. A rare example in overall very fine condition.
