Germany, HJ. An Early HJ Knife, by Anton Wingen Jr.
(HJ Fahrtenmesser). An exceptionally well-preserved HJ member’s knife, measuring 255 mm in length when inserted into the scabbard. The knife features a 140 mm-long nickel-plated magnetic metal blade. The blade features an acid-etched inscription of “BLUT UND EHRE” (“BLOOD AND HONOUR”) on the obverse, while the reverse bears a maker’s mark of “ANTON WINGEN JR., SOLINGEN”. Both the tip and edge of the blade are in a sharpened condition. The blade retains a brown leather washer around the seam of the upper crossguard, the latter constructed of nickel-plated magnetic metal and featuring a hooked quillon. The handle grip is of multi-piece constructed and consists of two strips of black pebbled bakelite, held together by two visible magnetic metal rivets. Set into the obverse handle is a HJ insignia consisting of a red and white enameled diamond with a central black enameled mobile swastika. The insignia measures 12 mm (w) x 18 mm (h). The pommel features a slight curve, facilitating a secure grip with the upper crossguard. The knife is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of black painted magnetic metal. The throat retains a functional spring catch, held in place by a single rivet, securely holding the dagger in place during storage. Two reverse rivets accommodate a brown leather strap, with a belt loop bearing a functional magnetic metal snap button. With the exception of some minor running marks on the blade, the knife presents free of evident faults an is in a near mint condition.
