Germany, DRK. A German Red Cross Officer’s Dagger

(Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Offiziersdolch). A very well-preserved German Red Cross (DRK) Officer’s dagger, measuring 380 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 250 mm-long nickel-plated magnetic metal blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edges. The blade is unmarked and sits securely within the silvered upper crossguard, with the seam covered by an intact blackened leather buffer pad. Each side of the crossguard bears an oval disc. The obverse disc features an insignia in the form of a raised DRK-style German national eagle clutching a Geneva Cross and overlaid by a mobile swastika. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed orange celluloid, completing in a silvered, flattened, circular pommel. The pommel bears a single nut, maintaining the structural integrity of the dagger. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft with a pebbled exterior. The upper third of the scabbard bears two integrated bands, each bearing a rectangular loop for the accommodation of a dagger hanger. The throat is held together by dual side rivets and retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the dagger in place during storage. While well-preserved the dagger demonstrates some issues consistent with age and use, including running marks to the blade, loss of finish to the metallic elements, and some loosening of the handle. It is in an overall better than very fine condition.
