Germany, Heer. An EM/NCO’s Sabre, by Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Co.
(Heer Säbel). A well-preserved Heer EM/NCO’s sabre, measuring 1010 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a curved polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip, unspoiled edges, and with a fuller running the length of each side. It presents plain, with the exception of a maker’s mark near the obverse ricasso of “WKC” for Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Co., Solingen, topped by the firm’s classic knight’s helmet logo. The blade sits securely within a multi-piece hilt consisting of a magnetic metal crossguard and hang guard, with the former bearing a raised mobile swastika on the obverse. The handle grip consists of a piece of ribbed black bakelite securely set within the hilt, with the ribbing retaining an original twisted and rolled non-magnetic wire cord. Wrapped around the hilt is a portepee consisting of a stylized acorn constructed of silver-grey and blue treading, suspended from a field-grey leather strap. The sabre is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft with an integral suspension loop. Dual side rivets maintain the structure of the throat. Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include some running marks and oxidation of the blade and metal features, loss of paint to the scabbard, the loss of functionality to the scabbard’s throat catch, and some wear to the portepee. The sabre is in an overall very fine condition.
