Germany, Heer. An Enlisted/NCO Dress Sabre, by Carl Eickhorn
(Heer Säbel). A well-preserved Heer Enlisted/NCO dress sabre, measuring 980 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 825 mm-long curved and polished magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened low edge, and with a fuller running down the length of each side. It is plain with the exception of a maker’s mark near the reverse ricasso reading “ORIGINAL EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic logo of a squirrel clutching a sword. The blade sits securely within a multi-piece silver-plated zink alloy hilt, with the seam covered by an intact brown leather buffer pad. The hilt features a hooked quillon and curved guard. A single piece of ribbed black bakelite comprises the handle grip, with the ribbing retaining an original aluminum wire wrap. Accompanying the sabre is its original scabbard, constructed of a black-painted magnetic metal shaft. The upper portion of the shaft features a ring with a suspension loop for the accommodation of a hanger, with an additional outer integral loop. The throat is held together with one of two original rivets and retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the sabre in place during storage. Some issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include slight running marks to the blade, minor oxidation of the zink alloy features, loosening of the handle wire, and loss of paint, denting, and oxidation of the scabbard. It is in an overall very fine condition.
