Germany, Luftwaffe. A Rare Damascus Blade Officer’s Sword

(Luftwaffe Offiziersschwert). A rare and privately-purchased Luftwaffe Officer’s sword, measuring 920 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a striking 720 mm-long Damascus steel blade with a sharpened tip and semi-sharpened edges. Both the obverse and reverse of the blade feature partial fullers set into the upper third of the shaft. The blade is marked DAMASC. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard, with each side presenting with a gilt sunwheel-style mobile swastika centrepiece. Emanating from each side of the swastika are stylized and downward-curved feathered wings.

The seam where the blade meets the crossguard is covered by an intact and period original blue leather buffer pad. A strip of ribbed and boiled blue leather composes the handle grip, which is wrapped in a period original twisted and rolled copper wire cord. Completing the sword is a flattened and rounded nickel-silver pommel. The edge features engraved oak leaf designs, while each side bears a gilt sunwheel-style mobile swastika. Disassembling the handle, an engraved mark of “DAMAST” is visible on the tang, indicating certified Damascus steel construction. The sword is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a magnetic metal shaft, wrapped on the exterior with a boiled blue leather liner. Nickel-silver fittings are affixed to both the tip and throat of the scabbard, each secured in place with dual side rivets. Intricate oak leaf patterns are etched onto the surface of both fixtures.

The throat retains a functional spring catch, securely holding the sword in place during storage. Dual integrated loops emanate from the sides of the throat fixture, in turn bearing suspension loops for the accommodation of a sword hanger. The former is included, and consists of a blue leather base, securely sewn into a loop with heavy stitching. A non-ferrous metal buckle emanates from within the loop and connects to a brown leather hanger, connecting with a functional magnetic metal spring clip. The hanger fastens into a loop for uniform suspension, opening with a functional magnetic metal stud. Minor, age-appropriate issues are evident, and include some loss of finish to the nickel-silver elements, loosening of the pommel, and wear of the leather features. This rare, complete, and high-quality set is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
