Germany. A Mint Kriegsmarine Issue Narvik Shield
(Kriegsmarine Narvik Schild). Constructed of of gilded non-magnetic metal (probably zinc); the obverse featuring a national eagle with swooped down wings, clutching a wreathed swastika; inscribed “Narvik” in capital letters, with an Edelweiss flower (representing the Heer) in the center between the date “1940” and a crossed anchor (representing the Kriegsmarine) and propeller (representing the Luftwaffe); with a dark blue wool backer and black paper backing fully preserved; the metal shield measuring 41.4 mm (w) x 91.95mm (h); with all of its original gilt finish preserved; an excellent example, in absolutely mint condition.
