Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Minesweeper War Badge, by Schwerin & Sohn
(Kriegsabzeichen für Minensuch-, U-Boot-Jagd- und Sicherungsverbände). Constructed of gilded tombak, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Wehrmacht eagle clutching a mobile swastika, around a central depiction of a sea mine exploding, the reverse with a block hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, designer marked “OTTO PLACZEK, BERLIN” and maker marked “SCHWERIN, BERLIN”, measuring 42.34 mm (w) x 53.87 mm (h), loss of finish is evident throughout and there is evidence of period repair to the catch and hinge, in overall very fine condition.
