Germany, Kriegsmarine. A U-Boat War Badge, by Schwerin
(U-Boot Kriegsabzeichen). Re-Issued on 3 October 1939 by Karl Dönitz. (1939-1945 Issue). Constructed of gilt tombak in the shape of a horizontally oriented oval laurel wreath, with a national eagle placed on-top of the badge clutching a mobile swastika, and with a submarine superimposed in the center of the badge, the reverse with a block hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, unmarked but with the physical characteristics of manufacture by Schwerin, Berlin, measuring 48.31 mm (w) x 38.96 mm (h), weighing 24.8 grams, a gouge is evident to the eagle's right wing with characteristics suggesting a rare die or manufacturing flaw, in otherwise very fine condition.
