Germany. A Cased Luftwaffe Combined Pilots/Observer Badge, by F. Linden of Lüdenscheid, c. 1944
(Gemeinsame Flugzeugführer und Beobachterabzeichen). Two-piece construction of gilded zink and silvered tombac; the obverse with a silvered oval shaped oak and laurel wreath tied together at the base via a ribbon, with a large patinated eagle with spread-out wings superimposed on the badge, clutching a swastika in its talons; two rivets on the reverse, with vertical needle style pinback with a barrel hinge and a round wire catch; unmarked, but displaying the typical manufacturing characteristics of Friedrich Linden of Lüdenscheid; measuring 64.29 mm (w) x 53.24 mm (h); weighing 44.6 grams. Accompanied by its case, constructed of heavy cardstock, with a black lightly textured faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the exterior of the case embossed with “Luftwaffe Flugzeugführer und Beobachterabzeichen” in golden lettering; with a lined interior lid and a slotted medal bed; measuring 80 mm (w) x 81 mm (h); the badge in overall very fine condition with some of its original gilt finish having been worn off due to age and wear - the case in fine condition; missing the front wall of the case lid; overall very fine condition.
