Germany, Luftwaffe. An Observer’s Badge with Case, by Wilhelm Deumer
(Beobachterzbeichen). Institued on 26.3.1936. (Issued 1936-1945). Constructed of feinzink, with a richly-detailed oak leaf wreath bearing a stylized “J-1” type Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, the reverse presents with a barrel hinge accommodating a vertical pinback with a flat tip meeting a round wire catch, two smooth-domed rivets at the top half of the reverse of the wreath securely hold the obverse eagle in position and bear the trademark trenching of the maker marked “Wilhelm Deumer, Lüdenscheid” on the reverse of the eagle, measuring 53.5 mm (w) x 52 mm (h) and weighing 43.7 grams, in very fine condition, includes period original case, consisting of a sturdy cardstock frame with pebbled faux black leather exterior and “Beobachter” (“Observer”) stamped in gold Fraktur-style font on the centre of the lid, functional magnetic metal interior spring catch with exterior stud release, functional magnetic metal hinge, with beautifully intact dark purple interior lining with hinge cover, vertical slit accommodating placement of badge, in very fine condition.
