Constructed of nickel-silver with gilt, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel and oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, overlaid by a swooping Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse eagle in place, with a raised barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, maker marked with the logo of Gebrüder Wegerhoff, Lüdenscheid, measuring 63.18 mm (w) (inclusive of wingspan) x 52.68 mm (h), weighing 48.0 grams, accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a card stock frame with a faux dark blue leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilt inscription of “LUFTWAFFE FLUGZEUGFÜHRER- U. BEOBACHTERABZEICHEN”, the interior with an intact blue rayon hinge cover and slotted felt medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release, unmarked, measuring 80 mm (w) x 80 mm (l) x 28 mm (h), the case demonstrating material fatigue including the detachment of the medal bed and loss of the lid liner, the badge in a near mint condition.
