A fine early quality textbook example of a “Pilotenabzeichen”; two-piece construction; silvered tombac oval wreath with laurel wreaths towards the left side, and oak leaves towards the right side, separated by three small ribbon-like loops on the bottom, with a large patinated eagle with spread-out wings superimposed on the badge, clutching a swastika in its talons; two rivets on the reverse; vertical needle style pinback with a barrel hinge and a round wire catch; measuring 52.96 mm x 65.65 mm; maker marked “C. E. Juncker, Berlin S. W.” on the reverse; weighing 42.7. Accompanied by its case of issue; constructed of heavy pressed paper with a lightly textured blue faux leather (leatherette) exterior; embossed with “Luftwaffen Flugzeugführerabzeichen” in gilded lettering on the outside lid; lined lid with a slotted medal bed for seating of the award; functional spring catch with stud release; intact fabric hinge cover; functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 82 mm x 74 mm; near extremely fine condition.
