(Danziger Kreuz, I. Klasse). Instituted 31 August 1939 by Gauleiter Albert Forster. (1939-1940 issue). Constructed of gilded bronze with enamels, consisting of an elongated Cross Pattée with a gilt frame, the obverse with white enameled arms highlighted on the interior with gilt borders, the centre and twelve o’clock arm overlaid by double gilt Cross Pattées topped by a stylized crown, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a raised barrel hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flattened catch, unmarked but with all of the physical characteristics of the sole accepted manufacturer of Hülse, Berlin,, measuring 43.00 mm (w) x 61.06 mm (h), weighing 33.0 grams, with minor flecking of enamels evident, an otherwise exceptionally well-preserved example of this rare award in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Danzig Cross was a particularly rare decoration instituted by the Free City of Danzig (as a distinction for furthering the NSDAP in the region), with 88 known awards bestowed, most of which were distributed in a ceremony held on 24 October 1939.
