Germany, Third Reich. A German Eagle Order, Silver Medal of Merit with Case, by the Prussian State Mint
(Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler, Silberne Verdienstmedaille mit Etui). Instituted 1 May 1937. (1937-1943 issue). Constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with horizontal pinback, the obverse bearing a raised Maltese Cross, with NSDAP-style German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas joining the quadrants, the reverse with an inscription of “DEUTSCHE VERDIENST-MEDAILLE” (“GERMAN MERIT MEDAL”) in raised Fraktur script, the edge marked with a crescent moon indicating German manufacture, a silver content number of “835”, and a mark of “PR. MÜNZE BERLIN” for the Prussian State Mint in Berlin, measuring 38.08 mm in diameter, weighing 23.1 grams (inclusive of ribbon), accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux red leather exterior, the lid with a gold embossed NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the interior with a white satin-type lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a gold inscription of “DEUTSCHE VERDIENSTMEDAILLE” (“GERMAN MERIT MEDAL”), with a depressed black velvet medal bed, opening with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 76 mm (w) x 115 mm (l) x 22 mm (h), somematerial fatigue is evident to the case, in overall near extremely fine condition.
