Germany, Third Reich. An Order of the German Eagle, II Class Cross with Breast Star and Case, by Gebrüder Godet
(Orden vom Deutschen Adler, II. Klasse Kreuz mit Bruststern und Etui). Instituted 1 May 1937. (1943-1945 issue). An Order of the German Eagle II Class set, including a cross, constructed of gilded silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms, with each quadrant joined together by a gilt NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika on a white enameled background, the obverse overlaid by central gilt crossed swords, the twelve o’clock arm with a ribbed fan transitioning to an integral loop, in turn bearing a ribbed suspension ring connecting to a period original neck ribbon, the integral loop maker marked with Präsidialkanzlei code “21” for Gebrüder Godet & Co., Berlin, and a silver content number of “900”, measuring 50.51 mm (w) x 59.20 mm (h), weighing 28.8 grams; accompanied by its breast star, constructed of gilded silver with enamels, consisting of a six-pointed radiant star, the obverse overlaid by a central white enameled Maltese Cross, with each quadrant joined together by a gilt NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika on a white enameled background, with central gilt crossed swords, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a barrel hinge and narrow banjo-style pinback meeting a rounded catch, the pinback maker marked with Präsidialkanzlei code “21” for Gebrüder Godet & Co., Berlin, and a silver content number of “900”, measuring 65.97 mm (w) x 75.68 mm (h), weighing 54.2 grams; both accompanied by their period original presentation case, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux red leather exterior, the lid bearing a gilt embossed German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, with a gilded border, the interior with a white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, the former bearing a gilt inscription of “VERDIENSTKREUZ MIT STERN DES ORDENS VOM DEUTSCHEN ADLER MIT SCHWERTERN”, with a depressed and slotted black velvet medal bed, opening with dual functional metal snap buttons and a functional metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 160 mm (w) x 240 mm (l) x 40 mm (h); some tarnishing and loss of gilt is evident to both decorations, in addition to material fatigue to the presentation case which includes a lengthwise crack to the lid, in overall better than very fine condition.
