Germany, Third Reich. An Order of the German Eagle, Merit Medal in Silver, by the Official Berlin Mint
(Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler, Silberne Verdienstmedaille). Instituted 1 May 1937. (1943-1945 issue). Constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with horizontal pinback, the obverse with a raised Maltese Cross, with German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas joining the quadrants, the reverse with an inscription of “DEUTSCHE VERDIENSTMEDAILLE” (“GERMAN MERIT MEDAL”), the edge with a maker’s mark of “PR MÜNZE BERLIN” for the official Berlin mint alongside a silver content number of “835”, measuring 37.90 mm in diameter, weighing 23.0 grams (inclusive of ribbon), accompanied by its period original presentation case, constructed of a wood frame with a faux red leather exterior, the obverse lid with a gold embossed German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the interior with a white satin lid liner bearing an inscription of “DEUTSCHE VERDIENSTMEDAILLE” (“GERMAN MERIT MEDAL”), with an intact hinge cover and slotted black velvet medal bed, opening with a functional magnetic metal spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional magnetic metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 85 mm (w) x 125 mm (l) x 23 mm (h), in near extremely fine condition.
