Germany, Third Reich. An Order of the German Eagle, V Class Cross with Swords, by C.F. Zimmermann
(Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler). Instituted 1 May 1937. (1943-1945 issue). Constructed of gilded silver with enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms, each quadrant joined together by a double-sided gilt NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika on a white enameled disc, the obverse three and nine o’clock arms overlaid by crossed gilt swords, the twelve o’clock arm with an integral fan suspension and loop retaining a period original ribbon, unmarked but with the physical characteristics of manufacture by C.F. Zimmermann, Pforzheim, measuring 45.05 mm (w) x 50.90 mm (h), weighing 24.3 grams, with minor flecking and scratching evident to the enamels, in near extremely fine condition.
