Germany, DRK. A Cross of Honour of the German Red Cross, Type III
(Medaille des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes). Instituted 6 April 1937 by Duke Carl Eduard of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. (1937-1939 issue). Constructed of silvered bronze with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of a red enameled Geneva cross, overlaid by a central black enameled German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, with its arms joined at the outer quadrants by a circular white enameled ring, the reverse of the cross featuring a pebbled finish, overlaid by a central raised inscription of “FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS DEUTSCHE ROTE KREUZ” (“FOR SERVICE TO THE GERMAN RED CROSS”), unmarked, measuring 38.19 mm in diameter, weighing 14.5 grams, flecking and loss of finish are visible to the enamels and base metal, respectively, in very fine condition.
