Germany, Weimar Republic. A Fire Brigade Personnel Visor Cap
(Feuerwehr Schirmmütze). A Weimar-era fire brigade personnel visor cap, constructed of black wool. It features reinforced side walls, trimmed along both the top and bottom edges with red wool piping. An additional band of identical piping lines the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is a bronze insignia consisting of a fireman’s helmet overlaying a cross pick and axe, measuring 33 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Directly underneath the peak insignia, the cap band is pinned with a non-magnetic metal cockade measuring 20 mm in diameter. Completing the exterior features is a protruding vulcanfibre visor, finished in a glossed black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. The interior edge of the cap band features a brown leather sweatband, and the interior is also fully encompassed by a black cotton-blended liner. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 240 mm (w) x 260 mm (l) x 135 mm (h). Issues consistent with age and use are evident, and include some wear and mothing of the exterior wool and piping, fatigue of the visor, soiling of the interior, and distortion of the side walls. It is in an overall fair condition.
