Germany, Weimar Republic. A Prussian War Commemorative Cross 1914-1918 for Combatants
(Preußisches Kriegserinnerungskreuz 1914-1918 für Kämpfer). Constructed of silvered bronze with multi-coloured enamels, on loop for suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon, consisting of a Cross Pattée with white enameled arms trimmed with black borders and with crossed swords piercing the centrepiece, the obverse bearing a central white enameled disc overlaid by a Prussian imperial eagle, set within a black enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “PREUSSENS TAPFEREN KRIEGERN” (“PRUSSIA’S BRAVE WARRIORS”) with oak leaf branches, the reverse arms bearing an inscription of “WELTKRIEG” (“WORLD WAR”) with oak leaves, bearing a central white enameled disc overlaid by gilt dates “1914-1918”, set within a black enameled ring bearing a gilt inscription of “PREUSSISCHES KRIEGS ERINNERUNGS KREUZ” (“PRUSSIAN WAR COMMEMORATIVE CROSS”), unmarked, measuring 38.68 mm (w) x 43.94 mm (h), weighing 22.6 grams (inclusive of ribbon), with minor flecking evident to the enamels, in extremely fine condition.
