A First War Group to the Lieut. Commander of Torpedo Boat 92 - 1914-15 Star (GNR. R.F. JAY, R.N.); British War Medal (CH. GNR. R.F. JAY. R.N.); and Victory Medal (CH. GNR. R.F. JAY. R.N.). Naming is officially impressed. Court-mounted, light contact, plated, better than very fine. Footnote: Raymond Frederick Jay was born on December 5, 1875. He was named a Gunner in the Royal Navy on June 20, 1902 and served with the Cruiser Flagship, HMS Euryalus in Australia effective January 8, 1904. He was posted to HMS Vernon for Torpedo School on June 24, 1907, then placed with the Cruiser HMS Endmyion aboard the Gunnery Training Ship, HMS Sheerness on December 8, 1908. Jay was place in command of Torpedo Boat 91 at Gibraltar effective August 25, 1909, then placed in command of Torpedo Boat 027 and attached to HMS Victory effective October 22, 1910. After one year, he was shifted to HMS Adamant, the Depot Ship for Submarines, on October 27, 1911 for the next two years, before being posted to Torpedo Boat 92 in Gibraltar as a Gunner, where he was established as second-in-command on November 15, 1913. During the latter part of his four years with Torpedo Boat 92, Jay achieved the rank of Chief Gunner on June 20, 1917, followed by a posting ashore at the end of the year to HMS Cormorant at the Naval Base in Gibraltar "For General Staff Duties" on November 24, 1917. Upon the ceasing of hostilities, he was posted to the Trawler HMS Hero, attached to HMS Vernon and placed in command, on August 28, 1919, where he was commissioned as a Gunner, returning to his original rank. For his First World War service, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. In 1920, he was posted to HMS Columbine at the Naval Base at Port Edgar in South Queensferry, Scotland, on February 18th, followed at the close of the year with a posting to the Torpedo School at HMS Vernon, "For charge of Ordnance Stores" on November 12th. He remained at HMS Vernon, where he was assigned to the "Mining and Anti-Mining Design Department" on July 18, 1922 and promoted to Lieutenant the following month, on August 12, 1922. Jay retired from active service in the Royal Navy in 1926 and was named Lieutenant Commander (Retired) on August 2, 1930.
