A First War Trio to Warrant Telegraphist Arthur W. Watson; Royal Navy - 1914-15 Star (WT. TEL. A.W. WATSON. R.N.); British War Medal (WT. TEL. A.W. WATSON R.N.); and Victory Medal (WT. TEL. A.W. WATSON R.N.). Naming is officially impressed. Mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, as worn by the veteran, original ribbons, very dark patina, light contact, better than very fine. Accompanied by a copy of his Service Records. Footnote: Arthur Walker Watson was born on May 4, 1886 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England. He signed on for twelve years' service in the Royal Navy on December 14, 1903, stating his occupation as that of Clerk and served aboard various ships and at various installations, including: H.M.S. Northampton, Victory I, Pembroke, Leander, Vulcan, Leviathan, Bacchante, Berwick, Vernon, Amethyst and Glasgow, the later from September 1912 to April 1915. He qualified as a Signalman (August 24, 1905), Leading Signalman (January 16, 1906), Leading Telegraphist (November 12, 1907) and P.O. Telegraphist (January 6, 1910). During the First World War, Watson was with the Cruiser H.M.S. Glasgow at the Battle of the Falkland Islands on December 8, 1914 against the Imperial German Navy. The British had been defeated at the Battle of Coronel off the coast of Central Chile on November 1st, with the Glasgow escaping Coronel, suffering five hits and having five of her crew wounded. The British sent a large force to track down and destroy the victorious German cruiser squadron in the Falkland Islands, which resulted in a British victory. Watson followed his exploits in the South Atlantic with a posting to the training establishment H.M.S. Ganges on January 6, 1916, then transferred to H.M.S. Vulcan on February 19, 1918, the Torpedo Ship and Depot Ship for Submarines "For Duty with Flotilla". Post-war, he was posted to the Submarine Depot Ship H.M.S. Titania on April 9, 1919, then transferred to the Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Repulse on February 15, 1922. He retired from active service in March 1923.
