A Most Excellent Order of the British Empire to the British War Relief Society
Gold with red and black enamelled centrepiece ring, mounted to a silver gilt with light blue enamelled cross, unmarked, 63.7 mm x 81.5 mm, on an original full-length neck ribbon with hook and eye, intact enamels, slight tarnishing, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, marked "C.B.E." on the lid, maker marked "GARRARD & Co Ltd LONDON, W.1." on the inside lid, lightly soiled recessed medal bed, with "Instructions as to wearing Insignia" card, case near extremely fine. Accompanied by an article from the Boston Herald of Wednesday, December 18, 1946, entitled "145 NEW ENGLANDERS HONORED FOR WAR AID TO GREAT BRITAIN", the article noting the two recipients of the CBE as: 1. Boston attorney and co-chairman of the British War Relief Society (1941 & 1942), Stuart C. Rand, and 2. Boston businessman and co-chairman of the British War Relief Society (1943 and on), Merrill Griswold, with the photo above of both receiving their awards. [C:151]
