United Kingdom. English, Irish and Scottish Firearms Makers

Hardcover, maroon cloth cover, with dust jacket, the text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "English, Irish and Scottish Firearms Makers - When, Where, and What They Made - From the Middle of the Sixteenth Century to the End of the Nineteenth Century", by A. Merwyn Carey, copyrighted by the author in 1954 and 1967, published by Arms and Armour Press of London, first edition in 1954, first British edition in 1955, second British edition in 1967, this edition reproduced from the 1954 original by kind permission of the Thomas Y. Crowell Company, printed in England by Photolithography by Unwin Brothers Limited of Woking and London, dust jacket design by Bill Payne. As noted on the dust jacket: "This book represents thirty-three years of careful and diligent research, collecting and inspecting old firearms. Over one hundred pages present a valuable detailed biographical encyclopaedia of English, Irish and Scottish Firearms makers. This section contains more than one thousand seven hundred and fifty entries, alphabetically listed. Each entry gives the name of the maker, the span of years he was active, and the town or city - with the shire or county - where he was located. It covers the type of known arms made - both long and short arms - and those made under royal government contract as well as custom made. Where important makers are listed, the material is considerably expanded to cover a complete summary of their activities and their place in British firearms history. Three appendices provide a Chronology of English, Irish and Scottish Firearms, Reigns of England, and a Bibliography. This new edition (1967) is reproduced in facsimile from the original edition, which has long been unobtainable and is now much sought after by historians, libraries, curators of museums, antique dealers and collectors of firearms." It begins with an Introduction by Edward Wenham, followed by a Foreword by A. Merwyn Carey, a Table of Contents and a List of Illustrations. The bulk of the book contains over 1,750 Biographical Cyclopedia of English, Irish and Scottish Firearms Makers, presented alphabetically, and finishes with ten plates of photographs. It concludes with three pages of Notes, a Schedule of Gun Proof Marks Registered in England, a two page Appendix, a List of the Monarch Reigns of England and a two page Bibliography. The book contains 140 pages of text, along with ten photographs, printed in black ink, on a white paper stock, measuring 155 mm (w) x 245 mm (h) x 14 mm (d). It exhibits light wear and repair on the dust jacket, however, the pages and the cover of the book remain pristine. Near extremely fine.
