United Kingdom. The Naval General Service Medal Roll 1793-1840

Hardcover, sapphire blue cloth cover, the text on the front cover in gold-coloured ink, entitled "The Naval General Service Medal Roll 1793-1840", re-published (list only) by the London Stamp Exchange, undated but known to have been published in 1987, the author's name unstated, using the original content of Captain Kenneth J. Douglas-Morris, D.L., R.N. book of the same name published in 1982, printed in Great Britain by Antony Rowe Limited of Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. The book is organized by date and states the clasp that was issued, with a brief description of the action it was awarded for, along with the number of recipients of the award. The accompanying list of recipients is listed alphabetically, each listing stating the recipient's rank(s), the ship(s) he served with, and other clasp(s) issued to him for the medal. It begins immediately on page 1 with the first recipient, the Honourable Frederick W. Aylmer, who was in action on March 15, 1793, participating in a successful attack on the French trenches before Willemstadt by boats of Syren and other gun-boats. The last entry in the book acknowledges the 6,978 recipients of the Naval General Service Medal with the Syria clasp, issued for operations on the coast of Syria from September 10, 1840 until surrender of Acre on November 4, 1840, and the blockade of Egyptian ports September/December 1840. It concludes with a one page List of Abbreviations and a three page Index. The book contains 404 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a white paper stock, the name of the publication's previous owner stamped in black ink on the inside front cover endpaper, measuring 210 mm (w) x 302 mm (h) x 34 mm (d), accompanied by photocopied list of clasps. It exhibits a small indentation along the top edge of the front cover, however, the pages within remain pristine. An invaluable resource to historians and collectors, along with being an easily accessible record for the descendants of the recipients. Near extremely fine.
