As stated on the dust jacket: "In January 1879, Victorian Britain was horrified by the news of the disaster at Isandhlwana, where the Zulus surprised and massacred a British Army column of over 1,300 men. The defeat was followed by the heroic defence of the mission station at Rorke's Drift where no less than eleven Victoria Crosses were won. After minor setbacks, British columns rapidly advanced into Zululand and after fighting a number of major battles, occupying strategic positions en route, they subsequently fought and won the decisive battle of Ulundi, where the real military power of the Zulu nation was ended forever. The bulk of the book entails Portraits and Biographical Notices of the Sixty-Two Officers of the British Army who Lost Their Lives in the Zulu War. It concludes with Records of the Services of Every Officer of the British Army who was Engaged, and a two-page Index. The book contains 386 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a semi-coated white paper stock, with two maps on a white coated stock (Zululand showing the Movements of the Columns and Divisions in the Field inserted facing page 1, and Action at Isandhlwana inserted facing page 11), measuring 203 mm (w) x 272 mm (h) x 27 mm (d). It exhibits foxing along the top edge of the pages, however, the pages within remain unaffected. Near extremely fine.
