Hardcover, black cloth cover, the text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "Under Hazardous Circumstances: A Register of Awards of Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea 1939-1945", by Ronald Jack Scarlett, copyrighted by the author in 1992, published by The Naval and Military Press of Dallington, East Sussex, England, printed and bound in England by Antony Rowe Limited of Chippenham, Wiltshire, ISBN 0 948130 49 0. The announcement of the creation of the medal was made on March 18, 1941 in the Lloyd's List & Shipping Gazette. There were 530 medals awarded, all of these for acts during the Second World War. The last of the awards were made in December 1947 and October 1948. This was because many of the Merchant seamen were taken as prisoners of war, and their accounts of bravery were not reported to Lloyd's until after the war had ended. As stated in the Introduction: "In the following Register, all the recipients are listed, together with the accounts of why the award was made and includes those not published in Lloyd's List & Shipping Gazette. The details of these latter awards have been taken from previously unpublished confidential records of the Minutes of Lloyd's Sub-Committee. The Register has been arranged alphabetically under the name of the vessel in which the recipient was serving at the time of the incident for which the award was made. Brief details of the vessel are included. The date and place are also given as well as other details concerning the incident. The account from Lloyd's List & Shipping Gazette or Sub-Committee Minutes is recounted in full. Also stated are details of other awards made to the recipient. These are mainly those given by the Crown and in each case the relevant London Gazette date is noted. In many instances, the London Gazette entry gives a fuller account of the incident." It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by an Acknowledgements and an Introduction. The bulk of the book is the Register of Recipients of Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea, totalling 530 awards (509 from the Lloyd's List & Shipping Gazette over a seven year period (1941-1948), along with 21 that were not announced in the publication, arranged alphabetically under the name of the vessel in which the recipient was serving at the time of the incident for which the award was made, along with the date, the place, and other details concerning the incident. It concludes with a two page Glossary and Abbreviations, a one page Bibliography and an eight page Index. The book contains 140 pages of text, printed in black ink, on a white paper stock, page 1 partially adhering to the endpaper, pages 3-4 loose versus the binding, the remaining pages intact, measuring 210 mm (w) x 297 mm (h) x 17 mm (d). Better than very fine.
