Footnote: Ernest E. White was a Gunner (23846) with the Royal Garrison Artillery, before joining the Royal Horse Artillery as a Sergeant (91633) and later, the Royal Field Artillery. He advanced to the rank of Battery Sergeant Major and it was in this rank while with the 123rd Battery, 28th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where the Royal Field Artillery were supporting the 2nd Canadian Division, that he was cited for his Distinguished Conduct Medal, as mentioned in the Fifth Supplement to the London Gazette 30204 of Tuesday, July 24, 1917, on Thursday, July 26, 1917, page 7662: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When an ammunition dump was set on fire he rushed out and succeeded in putting the fire out alone. The battery at the time was being heavily shelled. His prompt action prevented a serious explosion." He finished the war in the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class with the Royal Artillery. White's First World War records indicate that he was entitled to the 1914 Star with Mons Clasp and the Victory Medal, in addition to the British War Medal, but both of these have been lost to time.
