United Kingdom. A DCM to Segt. Maj. White for Fire Service Under Shelling

Group of Three to Battery Sergeant Major/Warrant Officer 2nd Class Ernest E. White, Royal Field Artillery - Distinguished Conduct Medal, George V (91633 B.S. MJR: E.E. WHITE. 123/BY: 28/BDE: R.F.A.); British War Medal (91633 W.O. CL. 2 E.E. WHITE. R.A.); and Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V (1019260 W.O. CL. II. E.E. WHITE. R.A.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, pitting and edge nicks evident on the DCM and BWM, light contact, very fine. Accompanied by six pages from the National Archives with copies of his Index Cards, his citation from the Fifth Supplement to the London Gazette 30204 and the War Diary of April 7 to 13, 1917 confirming the Royal Field Artillery's support of the 2nd Canadian Division at Vimy Ridge. Footnote: Ernest E. White was a Gunner (23846) with the Royal Garrison Artillery, before joining the Royal Horse Artillery as a Sergeant (91633) and later, the Royal Field Artillery. He advanced to the rank of Battery Sergeant Major and it was in this rank while with the 123rd Battery, 28th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where the Royal Field Artillery were supporting the 2nd Canadian Division, that he was cited for his Distinguished Conduct Medal, as mentioned in the Fifth Supplement to the London Gazette 30204 of Tuesday, July 24, 1917, on Thursday, July 26, 1917, page 7662: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When an ammunition dump was set on fire he rushed out and succeeded in putting the fire out alone. The battery at the time was being heavily shelled. His prompt action prevented a serious explosion." He finished the war in the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class with the Royal Artillery. White's First World War records indicate that he was entitled to the 1914 Star with Mons Clasp and the Victory Medal, in addition to the British War Medal, but both of these have been lost to time.
