Footnote: Dr. Matthew Coates, M.D. was a Deputy Inspector-General in the Royal Navy. He received his professional training at Bristol and in Paris. Coates entered the Royal Navy as a Surgeon on October 20, 1859. From 1868 to 1865, he was Assistant Surgeon at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, and from 1867 to 1871 at the Devonport Dockyard. He became a Staff Surgeon on August 2, 1871, followed by a posting in 1875 as Staff Surgeon in charge of the Royal Naval Hospital at Esquimalt, Vancouver Island, Canada, where he would serve until 1878. He became a Fleet Surgeon on May 9, 1882 and retired with the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Hospitals and Fleets in the same year. After his retirement in 1882, Coates practised for a time at Streatham, London. He was a member of the British Medical Association and Durham University Medical Graduates' Association, and an Honourable Associate of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Dr Matthew was one of 910 St. John Ambulance Brigade recipients of the Queen Victoria Jubilee (Police) Medal in 1897. He died at Dawlish, Devon, England, on January 13, 1911.
