Instituted in 1888. In silver gilt with white enamels, measuring 18.5 mm (w) x 18.5 mm (h), with a push pin attachment, finely-crafted, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, simulated reddish-brown leather exterior, inside lid lined in white satin, padded and maker marked "SPINK LONDON", cherry red felt medal bed slotted to house the badge, case also extremely fine.

It is awarded in five grades: Bailiff or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame of Justice or of Grace, Commander Brother or Sister, Officer Brother or Sister, Serving Brother or Sister, Donat.
