A Battle of Britain RAF Channel Rescue Helmet
A rare type, produced for RAF rescue boat personnel who would retrieve downed pilots and aircrew in the English Channel. In steel, magnetic, in steel blue with a smooth finish, white RAF Rescue insignia painted on the front. The protective edge of the helmet in a magnetic steel. Inside with a blackened canvas liner stitched in place, the liner screwed in place to the dome, eight rubber wedges placed between the cradle and the inside of the helmet, the wedges spaced at equal intervals, rubber cross-shaped pad in the dome, size marked "7", maker marked "FFI II" and dated "1941" on the support strap butting the dome that faces the front beside the pad, elastic drawstring and canvas chinstrap with metal buckles riveted in place on either side and remains intact, three small holes in a triangular formation punched in the metal on either side of the helmet beside the brackets holding the chinstrap, measuring 290 mm x 307 mm x 120 mm, scattered chipping and spotting in the steel blue finish on the exterior, semblance of surface rust on the interior, oxidation evident on the buckle, light soiling on the chin strap, near extremely fine.
