A First War Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Side Cap
Fabricated from an olive green-khaki wool with fold down flaps on either side, the flaps held up with black metal hooks fed through embroidered loops, with two rising peaks forming a valley between the two panels, the front with two 11.7 mm wide buttons, the uppers of which are in dark brown bronze, the brass cores maker marked "GAUNT LONDON" on the reverse, each of the buttons illustrating the Royal coat-of-arms and holding the two ends of the flaps together, a 37.8 mm x 42.7 mm bronzed white metal Royal Flying Corps badge on the left side, held in place via intact prongs on the inside of the cap. The inside is lined in a light gray rayon, with a 15 mm wide soft white sweatband, silhouettes evident on the lining on either side where owner's/maker's labels once resided, measuring 115 mm x 300 mm, exhibiting light soiling on the lining and on the sweatband.
