United Kingdom. A First War Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Side Cap
Fabricated from an olive green-khaki wool with fold down flaps on either side, the flaps held up with silvered metal hooks fed through brown finished eyelets, with two rising peaks forming a valley between the two panels, the front with two 12.5 mm wide buttons, the uppers of which are in dark brown bronze, without maker marks, each of the buttons illustrating the Royal coat-of-arms, the top button holding the two ends of the flaps together, the threading on the bottom button having come away and the button re-attached to the body of the cap via a safety pin, a 38 mm x 43.7 mm bronze Royal Flying Corps badge on the left side, held in place via intact prongs and pin on the inside of the cap. The inside is lined in a yellowish-brown cotton-rayon blend, with an 18 mm wide soft brown sweatband, measuring 98 mm x 285 mm, exhibiting scattered repair spots on the exterior, surface wear on the buttons, fraying and green oxidation present from the lugs and eyelets on the interior lining. Very fine.
