A Late 1950's British Field Marshal's Dress Visor Cap
The exterior is fabricated from a greenish-khaki wool and designed with a traditional high peak. There is a 45 mm wide band of red wool around the circumference, two brown leather straps with smooth finished uppers and fixed loops creating the chin strap, slotted at the ends, secured on both sides by non-magnetic silvered metal buttons bearing the Field Marshal's crossed baton and sword within an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves. The flat visor incorporates a thick stiffener, the upper on the visor covered with the same colour wool as that used on the exterior of the cap. The rear skirt of the cap comes with four brownish-green ventilation eyelets. The front is adorned with a 45 mm x 57 mm Field Marshal's cap badge insignia, illustrating the left-facing lion standing upon the Queen's crown, above a crossed baton and sword, framed by an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves, in gold-coloured and silvered bullion wire, in various textures, black felt behind the crossed baton and sword, maroon felt in the voided area of the crown, with touches of red threading in the lion's crown and mouth, touches of red, green and blue threading in the crown's base, along with black threading giving definition to the lion's eyes, the body of the lion and the crown itself. Inside, the cap has a 40 mm wide brown leather sweatband, the two ends of the sweatband tied together at the rear via a white ribbon in a traditional bow-tie. The sides are lined in a brownish-gray nylon, the dome covered in a reddish-brown tinted moisture-resistant shield, the underside stamped in black ink with the Royal coat-of-arms and inscribed "BY APPOINTMENT HATTERS TO THE LATE KING GEORGE VI." above the maker's insignia and inscribed on the insignia's shield "HERBERT JOHNSON (BOND STREET) LTD. NEW BOND St. LONDON, W.". The cap measures 240 mm x 280 mm x 130 mm in height, exhibiting light soiling on the front and visor on the exterior, with slight separation of the leather sweatband from the body of the cap at the junction with the visor on the left side. It is free of mothing, exhibiting flawless, quality workmanship, maintaining its original period look. Very fine.
