United Kingdom. A Military Grade Pocket Watch, Named to D. Varcoe, St. Stephens 1888
The body of this pocket watch is silver, non-magnetic, non-functional (as the wind-up key has been lost to time) and weighs 122.4 grams. The white porcelain face is marked with the manufacturer's name "A.J. MORCOM" and marked "PATENT" and has bold Roman numerals in black, with a ring above marked with black rules in intervals of sixty minutes, the watch with a silver minute hand, the hour hand itself missing. The "VI" (6) position is obscured by the inset second hand clock with a steel blue secondhand. Hinged on the left side of the cover is a silver ring housing the clear glass crystal. The back cover housing the works has a hole for placement of the now lost key for winding up the watch and is engraved "FEB: 4th 1888 / D. Varcoe. / St. STEPHENS.". The obverse of the exterior cover illustrates an ornate garter centred within a thatched design. The underside of the obverse exterior cover is numbered "2348", hallmarked with the British lion, marked with a leopard's head (made in London), date marked "M" (1887) and silversmith marked "I.J.T.N." (Isaac Jabez Theo Newsome). The watch features a two-piece silver cap casing, the front piece voided for viewing the watch face, the underside of the front piece lined in red felt, the back piece stamped "22" and marked "VULCAN NB", the underside of which is lined in white and red felt. It is finished by a laterally-pierced ball with a silver ring suspension, the watch measuring 51 mm in width x 56.8 mm in height inclusive of its stem x 20 mm in depth. Very fine.
