WWI Wakefield GOLD Medal for Zepplein Kill - 9K Gold, weighing 9.1 grams, marked "9" and ".375" (9K Gold), hallmarked with an anchor (made in Birmingham), date marked "r" (1916), maker marked "Wn & Wb" (Mappin & Webb) and engraved to "GUNR. J. RIDD." on the reverse, obverse illustrating the armoral bearings of Colonel Sir Charles Wakefield, Lord Mayor of London, surrounded by the inscription "PRESENTED BY THE LORD MAYOR . COLONEL SIR CHARLES WAKEFIELD", reverse illustrating an anti-aircraft gun, inscribed "L-15" (German airship) at the nose of the gun and inscribed "WELL HIT / MARCH 31st - APRIL 1st 1916" below, 29 mm, near mint. In its hardshelled case of issue, maker marked "MAPPIN & WEBB Ltd., LONDON, E.C." on the inside lid, worn and scuffed exterior, case better than fine.Footnote: This British First World War medal in Gold was sponsored by Sir Charles Wheeler, as Lord Mayor of London in 1916. It was awarded as a token of appreciation, to the anti-aircraft gunners and search light operators in action, in the defence of London on the night of March 31 - April 1, 1916 and specifically in connection with their part in the destruction of the German raiding airship L15.
